Pretty stoked that Ridley Scott (director Alien, Blade Runner) is returning to sci-fi with his upcoming 3D film “Prometheus.”
Currently filming in Iceland, Ridley presented via live video, a sizzle reel to the San Diego 2011 Comic-Con crowd.
The film stars Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender (Magneto from X-Men: First Class) and Noomi Rapace (of the Swedish Girl With the Dragon Tattoo films), and co-written by Damon Lindelof of LOST fame.
We are still not sure whether this will be an Alien prequel. According to screenwriter Lindelof, the film will explore the nature and origin of an unknown extraterrestrial race.
Scott is a favorite filmmaker of mine, mainly because of his impeccable visuals and mood lighting. I mean, Blade Runner is still one of my favorite films. He is also a great dramatic director (Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Black Hawk Down, American Gangster). So I don’t expect this film to be too CGI heavy, except for the obvious space scenes.
Ridley Scott explains his absense from sci-fi:
“I was actually too busy doing other movies and exploring other genres, so frankly I never actually thought about science fiction until I realized there was something in the first Alien movie that nobody had ever asked the question about … and I thought that could be the centerpiece of what we’ve just completed. That said, that is the only DNA loosely applied to the original Alien. We’ve gone in a different directions, but in the last few minutes of this movie you’ll see what I’m talking about.”
Now I feel like watching the Alien movies… we’ll keep you posted.
The film is scheduled to be released on June 8, 2012.
